Malta Report 2010 – Winter Sun
Wednesday, March 9th, 2011Anna joined us last summer, and after visiting Malta in December, she has penned this account of her trip and her first six months as a travel agent!!
They say time flies when you’re having fun…… and here I am six months on. ‘Six months’ where has the time gone?
I started work in Ocky White travel in August 2010. I was very nervous about starting a new job and whole new experience. I had not worked in the travel industry before, yet had always in my heart wanted to work in travel agents. So when I saw the ad in the local paper, I just knew that if I didn’t try now I never would have the chance again. A couple of days later I sat waiting to see Mr White for my interview, ‘Anna what on earth are you doing ‘ is all that went through my mind. Thankfully Mr White took a chance and offered me the job. A whirlwind that’s all I can say….
On my first day I was greeted by the team, all eager to help. My first thing was to learn how to book National express. I thought I would never get the hang of it, yet here I am six months on putting together, anything from family holidays to tailor making tours for my clients. I have learned so much since I started In Ocky White Travel. Everyday is always different. New countries and of course by now I have my favourite companies.
I very much am in love with the Greek islands and having been to many myself enjoy talking to clients about what to see and the better places to stay on each island.
I am currently working on a Caribbean course that will better my knowledge of each Island, what they can offer and which is best to each client as we all have very different needs on our holidays.
I have also completed many courses. Each with different companies covering anything from Key camp, luxury travel, family adventure holidays, city breaks and ski. The main trouble with these courses is that every time I complete one I nag my poor husband to take me. I want to travel the world. This nicely brings me to a course I did with a company called Belleair they specialise in Malta. Three weeks after completing the course I received an email from them offering me a place on an educational trip to Malta….Wow this job just gets better and better.
December 2010 Malta
Beautiful, Romantic, Poetic and Steeped in History.
I have no one word to describe Malta! It was many things I never expected. Quite honestly a country I never really had thought about.
We stayed at the 5* Phonecia hotel located in the wonderful city of Valetta.
Valetta was a fantastic base for us and anyone wishing to explore the island.
Day 1
Greeted for breakfast by our Host Joseph and of course being a 5* star property champagne.
We were told of our plans for the day. Firstly we took a walk around the fortress city of Valletta with its quaint streets, fine palaces , museums and the fantastic St Johns Cathedral. We also walked around an amazing garden with breathtaking views across the opposite side of the island known as the three cities.
We drove to visit one of many properties that Belleair feature all ranging from 3 – 5 *. Each with their own advantage. Getting a great idea of the positions of each resort of Malta.
Day 2
Today we visited Gozo one of the small islands off Malta. The ferry was only a 20 min sailing but not being the best sailor I kept my head down and tried to lose myself in conversation with my fellow agents. I tried my best to not look out of the window but on approach to Gozo I could not help but look. What beauty a wonderful View one of the finest I have seen. With its old fishing boats and fisherman all awaiting their days catch enjoying the morning sun.
We spent four days in Malta enjoying tours around many hotels and of course not forgetting we sampled delightful meals and fine Maltese wine.
We visited the glass blowing factory and most resorts. Meeting with the hotel managers showing us what they can offer our guests.
The main things that will always stick with me was the very apparent Roman Catholic religion, that is a way of life for the Maltese. The beauty of the island was immense. The buildings and the views were incredible. And of course the old Leyland buses that Malta has become famous for.
I can not put into words the true beauty and history that is felt when just sat in the square of Valletta watching the locals go about heir every day business.
The ultimate question I guess is will I return? Would I take my family to Malta?
Yes! I have booked and am very much looking forward to returning to Malta & Gozo this summer.
So six months on do I enjoy my job? Did I make the right move?
Yes and most definitely yes.
More to the question did Mr White make the right move?
I can not answer this one, but maybe my clients can.
I will always do my up most for my clients.
I will strive to offer the best possible service that I can.
I have met some lovely people and look forward to meeting more in the future.
Happy Holidays

Friday, October 1st, 2010Well,time has certainly flown by,the bar be que summer we were told to expect passed us by,AGAIN !!! At least we have not had to deal with any more volcanic eruptions or BA strikes(he says keeping his fingers firmly crossed!)

Eleri is of course away on maternity leave at the moment but hopes to come back and rejoin us at some time in the future.
A new member of staff joined us in July,Anna.Although not coming from a travel background,Anna has impressed us all with her infectious enthusiasm and desire to learn. We have already enrolled her on the Caribbean Tourist Organization Specialist Course which no doubt she will complete and qualify very soon.

FANTASTIC EFFORT FOR CHILDREN IN NEED!!
Wednesday, November 25th, 2009I am delighted to say that the final total raised for Children in Need stands at a WHOPPING £477.50!!!!!
As well as the offer from Ocky White Travel, other members of staff in the shop pitched in too and all helped to swell the funds.Special mention must go to Noel Robinson, our maintenance man.Noel finally agreed, under intense pressure,to shave off his trademark moustache. This was a big decision for Noel, bearing in mind that he had had the moustache for 36 years, and even his wife had never seen him without it!!Special thanks too to Gareth and the rest of the team from Radio Pembrokeshire for their excellent coverage of the day’s fun and games.Last, but not least a big thank you to all those customers who booked their holidays over the weekend and have therefore contributed to such a worthy cause!!!
Children in Need.
Tuesday, November 17th, 2009Christine came into work today and announced that she had been thinking about what to do for Children in Need.Immediately fearing the worst,I told her it was a waste of time holding me as a hostage as no one would pay the ransom anyway!Luckily, she had a far more sensible idea.We have decided that for every holiday booking that we make between Thursday and next Tuesday,Ocky White Travel will donate £25 to Pudsey Bear.If you are thinking about your next holiday at this moment, why not pop in and see us in the next few days and contribute to a very, very worthwhile cause.
If things go wrong!!
Thursday, July 23rd, 2009It’s peak holiday time and many of you will be off soon to enjoy a week or two in the sun(hopefully, courtesy of Ocky White Travel!!)For the vast majority, the holiday will be enjoyable and relaxing, but just occasionally things can go wrong! Here are our tips to help you through any potential problems:
1/Always make sure you have a suitable travel insurance policy that will cover all your needs.Ask us for a quote.
2/If your bags get lost or damaged at the airport, you must get a written report from the service desk at the airport.Without a written report your insurers will be unlikely to settle any resulting claim.
3/Any problem in your hotel or resort must be reported to your tour rep or hotel manager immediately. You must give them an opportunity to put things right. If they then fail to do this, ask for and complete a complaints form from your rep and make sure he/she signs it!This will be vital if you wish to pursue the problem when you get home.
4/If the problem is to do with your accommodation, take plenty of photos to use as evidence.Take the names and adresses of others similarly affected so you can stay in touch.
5/If the problem is not resolved in resort, tell your travel agent when you get home.We can be a great help in advising what approach you should take to resolve any situation.
Have a great summer holiday!!
