Nearly A year now since I visited Sunny Southampton for the Cruise convention. After visiting a few of the ships I had my mind made up that I would love to take my family on a cruise.

Well,no sooner has Anna just returned from Mauritius, then Victoria jetted off for a week in Antigua! She stayed at Grand Pineapple and has just been back in work today ,showing off her tan of course!Grand Pineapple is highly recommended and offers superb value for money.
Also ,today Kevin has departed for his first ski short break of the season. We are all amazed because he is off to a new destination,Champoluc in Italy!Kevin normally goes to Mayrhoffen so It will be interesting to see what he makes of Italy.
Anna has recently returned from a wonderful”working”trip to the fabulous island of Mauritius. If you have ever wondered what this destination is like, read Anna’s report below and ask her to show you the photos that she took,it really is a true tropical paradise!!!!
On a cold, wet,
wintery October day, whilst we were all starting to think about Christmas, I
sat at my desk with a smug grin, because tomorrow I would be jetting off
to…..MAURITIUS!!
Woohoo! An
educational trip with a top luxury company.
How was I going to
explain that this was work?
If Only has offered
me a place on this amazing once in a lifetime trip. My only concern was – how I
was going to get to London? Although slowly, but surely, I am ticking off the
countries I have visited, I have yet to tick off London. I know this is
laughable, but my only worry was the drive to the airport.
Adding another tick
to my box, I drove my self to London, parked the car, and went to meet my
fellow travellers. 6 o clock came, and I made my way to the meeting point
having only met one of nine of my companions. I felt a little nervous about we
would all get on. Yet, as I neared our meeting point, I saw a little huddle of
people laughing and raising a glass to our busy week ahead. Again, how do I
explain this is work?
After two hours in
the airport with my host Liz, from If Only, and co-host, Maggie, a
representative from Air Mauritius, and the other seven travel agents from the
south west, we were one big happy family.
We boarded our
flight and settled down for our journey ahead. Our flight company was Air
Mauritius. It was a very comfortable journey, with ample entertainment, hot and
cold snacks served throughout, and wonderful cabin crew, who always made sure
you were comfortable.
Surrounding Mauritius is a natural reef that
circles the whole island, which creates a stunning lagoon. Coming in to land
over the turquiose waters of the Indian Ocean, it was hard to tell where the
sky ended and the sea began. The views were spectacular.
We were greeted at
the airport by White Sands Tours. This is the company that is used by If Only
to organise trips, transport and any needs of our clients while in resorts.
They greeted us with garlands of flowers and a wondeful smile ready to take us
to our first hotel.
The transfer to our
hotel was by mini-bus (although they offer helicopter transfers) gave us a
chance to take in the amazing scenery. It was clear there was more to Mauritius
than just stunning beaches.
Arriving at our
first hotel, I was sure that a good time was going to be had by all. It was a
five star property called Le Heritage Telfair. This was to be my base for the
next two nights.
Throughout the week,
we started at the south of the island and made our way south to west to north
to east, seeing which each resort had to offer. We managed to visit 12 hotels
in this time, all offering something different, from the colonial style of the
Sugar Beach Hotel, to the relaxing Beau Revage. For those who are more active,
there is the tropical Tamassa, which offers breathtaking contempary decor with
it’s 18 hole championship golf course, to the Porougue, ideally suited to
families and the more adventurous. Each of the hotels we visited offered
something different.
There is so much
more to Mauritius than what seems to be a tropical beach escape. Although the
lagoon is fantastic for water activities such as wind surfing, pedal boats,
kayaks, snorkelling and scuba diving, there is also plenty to do on-land. From
professional golf lessons, to tennis, volleyball, evening horse riding on the
water’s edge, mountain biking to stumbling across waterfalls and wildlife. My
favourite activity of the whole week was the quad biking through the sugar cane
plantations up into the mountains. This is an enclosed nature reserve where the
views are breathtaking. Once at the top, we swam in the pool of a waterfall
before heading back to play golf.
Each hotel had
fantastic facilities and amazing restauraunts. Mauritians traditionally eat a
creole based diet which is mostly fish. But most hotels offer a range to suit
all tastes.
And so, our jouney
came to an end, and it was time to make our way home.Yet, the excitment was
still there, because we were travelling home in buisness class. The flight home
was amazing, an experience I will never forget. To the champagne in my seat, to
the four course meal, a truly unforgettable journey that I am extremely
grateful I have had a chance to experience. Flying will never be the same
again!
Back in Heathrow, I
said my said my sad goodbyes to my new friends and made my way home, excited to
fill in my work colleagues of my week and what a wonderful experience I had.
I
always said that one day I would like to go to Mauritius, now I can’t wait for
the day that I return with my family to delicious Mauritius.
One of the perks of this job is travelling half way round the world to spend six days in 4 and 5 star hotels, enjoy hosted banquets and fantastic hospitality, all in the line of work!! Victoria recently visited Hong Kong on such a trip,so if you’ve ever wondered about this exotic and exciting destination, read on below:
In December I was given the amazing opportunity, a Work excursion to Hong Kong, here is my account of a fabulous 6 days.
Hong Kong is a very vibrant city which has lots to offer; fantastic as a 10 day vacation or a 4 day stop over while on route to Australia.
The Flight takes 12 hours, they are 8 hours ahead and the currency is the Hong Kong Dollar
There are a number of different areas in Honk Kong – The main 2 are Hong Kong Island and Kowloon
I stayed on Hong Kong Island and I was very lucky to stay at the Island Shangri-La 5 star hotel. It was amazing, as I walked through the entrance I was greeted by the management and the LARGEST Christmas tree you have ever seen, there were 56 floors in the Hotel and my room was on the 50th. The room had a superb view of Victoria Harbour and completely blew me away. The Hotel has 7 restaurants and one has a Michelin Star. That night we dined in the hotel.
We then ventured into Lan Kwai which I would advise everyone to visit. In the evening it’s a lively street lined with stylish Restaurants and trendy bars, after seeing a few different bars we decided to return to the hotel.
The following day we looked at the a number of hotels Below I have listed my 2 favourites in Hong Kong Island and Kowloon which rank from 4 – 5 star
Start With Hong Kong Island Hotels
Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong 5 Star
Fantastic hotel, very Glamorous and will meet all expectations. As it was Christmas time the hotel was decorated in fresh red roses with crystal from their florist even the Christmas trees had red roses on them. The hotel has 10 restaurants and bars to choose from .Outside the rooms they have a wardrobe especially for your paper or breakfast so they do not have to disturb you in the morning. If you stay at this hotel for 3 nights they will offer you a free night.
Eaton Smart Hong Kong 4 star
This hotel is very modern, they have lots of different aspects that make you want to stop and look one of the walls has a garden growing from it. In the lobby there is a huge giant bird cage. Sounds bizarre but looks fantastic. This hotel is a must to stay in or just go to see minimalism with a twist. It has 7 restaurants, 465 rooms, a great roof top pool ideal for going to with friends and trying the drinks menu, a great central location and the hotel comes in at very reasonable price.
The one Hotel I was not impressed with was the Traders hotel – it was a very big disappointment as they have one in Singapore and it’s a fantastic 4 star stay. It was very expensive and was nowhere near a 4 star rating.
Kowloon
Langham Place 5 star
Very Funky, cool hotel and amazing links to shopping mall. Hotel has 665 rooms and 42 levels .The hotel colours are grey, pink and green. Sounds bizarre but works really well, very upbeat feel and the rooms have a very modern minimalist feel. In the rooms a complimentary yo yo is a very nice touch to while away time. To sum up, good location, ideal for something different for a ladies holiday or a young couple.
Harbour Grand Kowloon (formerly known as the Harbour Plaza Hong Kong)
Located on the waterfront offering fantastic views of the Harbour, the hotel offers 554 rooms. We dined in the Promenade Restaurant at this hotel; the food was great with lots of different choices so if you are fussy they have something for everyone. The Waterfront bar and Terrace is the place to be seen and dine. This hotel offers luxury on all levels.
Things to do in Kong Hong
Take a tram ride to Victoria peak – The peak has the best views of Hong Kong and if you look at the hotels you can see a lot of effort has gone into building these. On one of the hotels there is a Kuala bear hugging it then on another there are guns pointing at another – the architecture is amazing also. At the top off the peak there is Madame Tussauds and a few places to eat. I would recommend you take a full day to do this as there is so much to see and do.
Go and see the largest Buddha in the world – there is a cable car journey to the Buddha – you can have a glass floor one or a covered one depending on how much you want to see and how you deal with heights . Once you get there you then climb the 268 steps up to the Buddha. The Buddha was constructed in 1990 and finished in 1993. It’s amazing to see .This trip will take you a whole day.
Take a ride around the fishing village on one of the local boats cost is about 5 dollars.
Hong Kong also has its own Disney Land it’s smaller than the one in Paris but a must to see –this will take you a full day.
Also take the star ferry over to Kowloon and at 8 o Clock every night there is a laser show which is done from the top of the hotels. This lasts about 40minutes.
Take a trip to the ladies late night market were you grab all your bargains – make sure you wear flat shoes as you will end up buying lots of items – this is where you need to be very good at haggling .
I had an amazing time in Hong Kong and would defiantly visit again; it has so much to offer.
Flights are direct with Virgin
Transfer time is approximately 40 minutes
And also Hong Kong has the best chocolate and cakes, their speciality is chicken legs which I tried but I prefer the Chocolate.
If you have any questions or want to know more about Kong Hong please call the office on 01437 763046
Kind Regards
Victoria
Anna and Christine recently attended a UK Cruise Convention in Southampton.Chris is an experienced “Cruiser” and knows all about the product,Anna was keen to learn as much as possible.
I think it is fair to say from her report below, that Anna is truly a Cruise convert now!If you have wondered about Cruising but perhaps have had some reservations, please read on:
“Well, end of June and I’m still here, just over a year since I joined the team at Ocky White Travel.Still enjoying every minute and still learning more every day.So much changes in the travel industry from one day to the next.
One of the most significant changes to have happened for me is Cruising!
Have you ever said that I will never go on a cruise?? Me too!!!
The brochure’s can be difficult to understand. My main issue is that I had never seen, let alone been on a cruise ship.If you had asked me which ship I would go on,my honest answer would have been “none!”-I don’t have the best sea legs!!!
But ask me now and the problem would be to stop me talking. This all changed when Christine(our cruise specialist)and I went to Southampton in April for the 2011 Cruise Convention.
After meeting Chris,we had a nice easy four hour drive down to Southampton. On our first night we were to stay at one of the port hotels. After checking in we decided on an evening stroll along the front to see if any of the ships were in.
Reminding you that I had never seen a Cruise Ship, imagine my surprise, and delight, when I saw the funnel over the hotel roof tops………..”Hey Chris, look there it is,that must be the Royal Caribbean ship”
I could not understand why she was laughing????
“Chris, what’s so funny?” “Have I missed something?”
I did feel little silly when she finally stopped laughing and said……
“Anna, that’s the P&O ferry!!!”
We had a lovely evening in sunny Southampton eagerly awaiting the next day.
Up nice and early we sat on the bus and Chris said” Hey Anna, look what’s in!”I looked up and honestly it took me a minute to realise that hotel wasn’t there the previous evening! The Independence of the Seas had docked during the night and is ABSOLUTELY HUGE!!!
We spent the day being shown around the ship.We saw the ice skating rink, the surf rider, the gym,the spa,the theatre, the promenade, the list is endless. So many features I could go on and on.I just could not get over the size and how wonderful this ship is.It was like a small country!!
Cruising is for older people…………DEFINITELY NOT !!
What was the best part? I couldn’t tell you,it was all just so amazing!!
Cruising is an expensive holiday……….DEFINITELY NOT!!!!There is so so much included,it is exceptional value for money!!
As we sat for our lunch we discussed what we had seen. The state rooms are all very well designed to give you as as much space as possible. The promenade was fab,the size of a football pitch! This is where the parades take place in the evenings. We saw one of the shows-fantastic entertainment! We had a delicious lunch on board and of course sampled the wine!
The following day we saw “Aurora”,one of the P&O Cruise fleet. This was a very different ship to the previous day.Still the same fantastic value for money, with entertainment, facilities, first class food and even delicious chocolates made on board. The state rooms were also amazing. The whole ship had a different feel to it.It was very British with its elegant staircase and stripey deck chairs.A different ship for a different client.
Here is where I realised that it’s not just about finding the right itinerary, but also the right ship.
No other holiday can offer such a variety of things to do!
You will unpack only once, but visit a new country every day!
Do things that you never thought possible at sea!
If you are interested in a cruise,or still need to know what’s included in the price of your cruise, pop in to Ocky White Travel and see my scrap book of pictures and just try to stop me talking.
I can’t wait for February 2012 when I will be taking my family on our first cruise. As for my sea legs,I now realise that there is a vast difference between a Ship and a boat!!!!
Bon Voyage Sailors!! ”
Anna joined us last summer, and after visiting Malta in December, she has penned this account of her trip and her first six months as a travel agent!!
They say time flies when you’re having fun…… and here I am six months on. ‘Six months’ where has the time gone?
I started work in Ocky White travel in August 2010. I was very nervous about starting a new job and whole new experience. I had not worked in the travel industry before, yet had always in my heart wanted to work in travel agents. So when I saw the ad in the local paper, I just knew that if I didn’t try now I never would have the chance again. A couple of days later I sat waiting to see Mr White for my interview, ‘Anna what on earth are you doing ‘ is all that went through my mind. Thankfully Mr White took a chance and offered me the job. A whirlwind that’s all I can say….
On my first day I was greeted by the team, all eager to help. My first thing was to learn how to book National express. I thought I would never get the hang of it, yet here I am six months on putting together, anything from family holidays to tailor making tours for my clients. I have learned so much since I started In Ocky White Travel. Everyday is always different. New countries and of course by now I have my favourite companies.
I very much am in love with the Greek islands and having been to many myself enjoy talking to clients about what to see and the better places to stay on each island.
I am currently working on a Caribbean course that will better my knowledge of each Island, what they can offer and which is best to each client as we all have very different needs on our holidays.
I have also completed many courses. Each with different companies covering anything from Key camp, luxury travel, family adventure holidays, city breaks and ski. The main trouble with these courses is that every time I complete one I nag my poor husband to take me. I want to travel the world. This nicely brings me to a course I did with a company called Belleair they specialise in Malta. Three weeks after completing the course I received an email from them offering me a place on an educational trip to Malta….Wow this job just gets better and better.
December 2010 Malta
Beautiful, Romantic, Poetic and Steeped in History.
I have no one word to describe Malta! It was many things I never expected. Quite honestly a country I never really had thought about.
We stayed at the 5* Phonecia hotel located in the wonderful city of Valetta.
Valetta was a fantastic base for us and anyone wishing to explore the island.
Day 1
Greeted for breakfast by our Host Joseph and of course being a 5* star property champagne.
We were told of our plans for the day. Firstly we took a walk around the fortress city of Valletta with its quaint streets, fine palaces , museums and the fantastic St Johns Cathedral. We also walked around an amazing garden with breathtaking views across the opposite side of the island known as the three cities.
We drove to visit one of many properties that Belleair feature all ranging from 3 – 5 *. Each with their own advantage. Getting a great idea of the positions of each resort of Malta.
Day 2
Today we visited Gozo one of the small islands off Malta. The ferry was only a 20 min sailing but not being the best sailor I kept my head down and tried to lose myself in conversation with my fellow agents. I tried my best to not look out of the window but on approach to Gozo I could not help but look. What beauty a wonderful View one of the finest I have seen. With its old fishing boats and fisherman all awaiting their days catch enjoying the morning sun.
We spent four days in Malta enjoying tours around many hotels and of course not forgetting we sampled delightful meals and fine Maltese wine.
We visited the glass blowing factory and most resorts. Meeting with the hotel managers showing us what they can offer our guests.
The main things that will always stick with me was the very apparent Roman Catholic religion, that is a way of life for the Maltese. The beauty of the island was immense. The buildings and the views were incredible. And of course the old Leyland buses that Malta has become famous for.
I can not put into words the true beauty and history that is felt when just sat in the square of Valletta watching the locals go about heir every day business.
The ultimate question I guess is will I return? Would I take my family to Malta?
Yes! I have booked and am very much looking forward to returning to Malta & Gozo this summer.
So six months on do I enjoy my job? Did I make the right move?
Yes and most definitely yes.
More to the question did Mr White make the right move?
I can not answer this one, but maybe my clients can.
I will always do my up most for my clients.
I will strive to offer the best possible service that I can.
I have met some lovely people and look forward to meeting more in the future.
Happy Holidays
Anna Reed
